Here’s Everything You Need to Know about Owning a Car in Dubai

Finally, you have your own car – but, what encompass it? What are the things you should do now? What is RTA Registration? What is RTA Renewal?

First of all, you need to have a license before purchasing your own car. In Dubai, if you are less than 21 years old, your license will only be valid for a year, and you have to renew it yearly until you reach 21. However, if you are over 21 already, your newly acquired license will be valid for almost 10 years.

Here are the documents that you need when you want to apply for a license:

1. Application Form

2. Passport ( original and copy )

3. Eye test

4. Passport size photograph

5. Residence Visa

6. NOC

Then, you need to apply your car for vehicle testing or car examining for RTA to make sure that your car is safe to be used on the road.

You will need:

1. Vehicle registration card

2. Emirates ID

3. Commercial license copy ( for commercial customers only )

And you have to go to testing centers like Tasjeel – but before going there, you must make sure that your vehicle is:

1. Clean

2. Have a plate number

3. No underside cover

4. Available safety triangle, spare wheel, fire extinguisher

5. No ads or stickers

You have 2 re-tests permitted if you ever fail your first one. In this event, you need to repair all the necessary fixations before you go for a re-test. Go to the same vehicle testing center when you first had it.

RTA Registration

When you pass the vehicle test, you will need to register your car as well, because if not, you won’t be able to use it here in Dubai.

You will need original copies of your:

1. Certificate of ownership

2. Certificate of insurance

3. Vehicle testing documents

4. Letter of mortgage

5. Invoice of vehicle purchasing

6. Transfer of vehicle plates

7. Emirates ID or Passport

RTA Renewal

After years of using and owning your car in Dubai, you will need to renew its registration.

You will also need your vehicle’s existing:

1. Registration card

2. Insurance certificate

3. Clearance certificate

4. Emirates ID
